In this week’s issue of Weekly News, we have: an fun idea to do at home, a new poll, and an update on the coronavirus. First, we have an idea to do at home. A DIY Escape Room! In one room in your house, invite members of your household to come to an escape room! What is an escape room? Usually located in professional rooms across the country, players solve fun logic puzzles to ‘escape’ the room! How do I make one? There are 10 key steps to building one at home. 1) Pick a room. Decide on any room in your house, preferably somewhere that others do not usually go in, so they can avoid it while you set up. 2) Create a theme. Make up an interesting story to explain why the players are ‘stuck’ in the room. Use your imagination; this is not real, but it makes the room more believable and fun. 3) Prepare. Tidy up so the room is ready for you to build your escape room. 4) Research. Look up puzzles and ideas online. 5) Brainstorm puzzles. Gather various ideas from the Internet or your previous knowledge of riddles and puzzles, then think about how to incorporate them into the game. This website may help: Lock Paper Scissors. 6) Gather supplies. Gather all the padlocks, props, and other thematic touches from around your house, and try incorporate them into your puzzle ideas and backstory. 7) Create puzzles. Now, create a step by step plan for your puzzles, and how to lead the players from one to the other. The last clue should lead back to the door. 8) Set up. Set up your props, type up your puzzles and backstory to print out, and place it all inside the room. 9) Lighting. To add more atmosphere consider the lighting and sound effects you can put in place. 10) Finish! Run through the final escape room and check everything is in order. Then allow the players to begin their adventure! Next, Ted and Ellie have been wondering about a very philosophical question. The Universe must have started somewhere. But did something come from nothing (Ted’s idea) or was something always there in the first place (Ellie’s idea)?
Many people have different theories. Some say God was always there, and He created the universe. Some say, from a more scientific perspective, that nothing is just matter (what everything is made of) and space, or antimatter, cancelling each other out to make nothing. This would mean that nothing basically expanded to create something in the Big Bang. Vote in the comments, and to find out more about these things, you could try watching:
Finally, on a more serious note, here is an update on COVID 19. Recently, it has been confirmed that more than one third of deaths are now linked to the coronavirus. Therefore, it is even more important that you stay inside to stay safe and keep others safe. Only go outside for necessary shopping, or a daily exercise. However, there are some exeptions for this rule, for example key workers still work, for example NHS staff or carers. Every Thursday at 8:00, please join in clapping for the NHS as they are risking their lives to help others, and this small good deed can brighten their day. Thank you for listening and stay safe in these uncertain times,
Ted, Ellie, Jack and the TFRC Team
